“The Beatitudes”

Not long ago I re-read the Beatitudes, found in Matthew, chapter 5.  I was again struck by how much different from “human nature” they are.  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, etc…?”  Was Jesus serious?   Yes.  It is we who must adjust our way of thinking about this, not Jesus.

My mom shared with me something that I think you will appreciate.  It talks about the Beatitudes from a different perspective.  A REALLY different perspective.

THE DEVIL’S BEATITUDES

If the devil were to write his beatitudes, they might be like the following:

  • Blessed are those who are too tired, too busy, too distracted to spend an hour a week in church – they are my best workers.
  • Blessed are those who wait to be asked and expect to be thanked – I can use them.
  • Blessed are the touchy: with a bit of luck, they may stop going to church – they are my missionaries.
  • Blessed are those who are very religious but get on everyone’s nerves – they are mine forever.
  • Blessed are the troublemakers – they shall be called my children.
  • Blessed are those who have no time to pray – they are easy prey for me.
  • Blessed are the gossipers – for they are my secret agents.
  • Blessed are those critical of a church leadership – for they shall inherit a place with me in my fate.
  • Blessed are the complainers – I’m all ears for them.
  • Blessed are you when you read this and think it is about other people and not yourself – I’ve got you.

Won’t you re-visit the real Beatitudes in Matthew 5 this month?  Won’t you join me in examining ourselves lest we conform to the devil’s “Beatitudes” instead of Jesus’?

Grace and peace,

Bro Sammy

 DID YOU KNOW?

NBC Wednesday night services have grown in attendance and two new classes have been added.  A pre-teen class for ages 9, 10 & 11  is being taught by Linda Burns and Sherry Atchley is teaching a senior high youth class.  Last weeks attendance was 71.  WOW!  Praise God!

Stacy Dunn collected the most food for the youth food drive and walked away with a lunch pail filled with all kinds of free goodies.  Our Youth at NBC collected 594 items of food.  Thanks teenagers for a GREAT job.  We love you!

What about that Performing Arts Team at NBC. WOW!  What a great job they did with their first skit.  The buzz around town is anticipating the Human Video performance on Sunday morning, September 16th.  You sure don’t want to miss this performance!

M & M Ministries held its first meeting on August 23rd in the fellowship hall of NBC, and from all accounts all who attended had a great time.  On August 30th Steve Maze was the guest speaker. What a pleasure it was to listen to his stories about the past and reminisce about days gone by.  On September 6th we will had a hot game of BINGO with great prizes and another good lunch.  Don’t miss this weekly event each and every Thursday morning at 10:00am.

FISH FRY planned for Wednesday, September 12th, 6:00pm at the home of Donald and Carla Hendrix.  This event will take the place of our usual Wednesday night service and is open to everyone.  The menu is: Catfish, Chicken Fingers, Fries, Slaw, and Hushpuppies.

 Something to ponder on…

God has been intimately acquainted with each human soul since the beginning of time.  He looks upon the world and sees billions of individuals, one at a time.  Each heart, each mind, and each soul--he knows them personally.  Intimately.  Because he fashioned each one individually.

So when your heart is full of joy, bursting with pleasure over an accomplishment or a deepened relationship or a conquered hurt, he feels it, too.

And when your heart hurts because someone has wounded it or you've disappointed yourself by the way you acted, he feels that, too.

Out of the billions of other souls in the world, God sees you.  He knows you.  He loves you.  And he's willing and able to help you.

Jeremiah 29:11-14    "For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord  "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  I will be found by you," declares the Lord.
